This public school, located adjacent to Pioneer Park, just west of the 57 freeway, serves about 700 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Sunkist Elementary School is one of the 24 schools that make up the Anaheim Elementary School District. A silver medalist in the California Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Coalition, the school provides students with a core academic program in a modern, technologically-forward environment. The students' social and emotional wellbeing also plays a critical role in the curriculum, helping to ensure that their development extends beyond learning. In addition, Sunkist Elementary offers a number of district-sponsored programs, including a unique Dual Language Immersion program. Beginning in kindergarten, students are taught using a model that will enable them to think, read, write and communicate naturally in both English and Spanish. Classes are mixed with students who are both native English and native Spanish speakers. The school also offers a Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) that is designed to meet the academic needs of exceptionally promising students in grades three through six. Sunkist Elementary understands that when families engage in their child’s education they learn more effectively. Because of this, the school has a Parent and Family Engagement Policy that helps to facilitate and ensure that this effort is taking place. The school also offers an award-winning, YMCA-run after school program, known as Anaheim Achieves, that provides a variety of fun and engaging activities that help to reinforce the curriculum being taught to students during the school day.
