Chinook Elementary School, home of the King Salmon, is like any other school of fish – staff, parents, and students working together toward a common purpose. At Chinook Elementary, that purpose is to create a safe environment to ensure its diverse community of students – more than 66% of Chinook students are non-white – learn, grow, and thrive. In addition to core academics, Chinook Elementary students learn the importance of cooperation and taking responsibility for themselves and their actions, skills that will carry with them throughout life. Art and health are taught weekly on a rotating schedule, and 1st through 6th graders can join the after school cross-country team.
Chinook Elementary is also home to an open optional program, a school-within-a-school setting open to students through a district-wide lottery. With 160 students divided among seven multi-age classrooms, or family groups, the Chinook Open Optional provides a small, supportive environment for children who may feel overwhelmed in a larger classroom setting. Students remain with the same teacher for two years, which provides stability to the student and helps teachers focus on a child’s strengths and weaknesses. Teachers work collaboratively to ensure students receive grade level instruction in math and language arts. Science and social studies are taught every other year, so students receive the same instruction as those enrolled in Chinook’s more traditional classroom.
