Hanshew Middle School is a public middle school located at 10121 Lake Otis Parkway. It is open to students who live in the Abbott Loop neighborhood and students who are accepted during the school district lottery, which takes place in March and July. The school serves 7th and 8th graders and has an average enrollment of 700 students. Its mascot is the Hawks.
Hanshew Middle School has a large outdoor soccer and baseball field and an all-weather Olympic-sized track. The field looks out onto the Chugach Mountains.
Hanshew Middle School provides an academically challenging curriculum, with an opportunity for students to enroll in a variety of elective courses designed to enrich their education. Core subjects include language arts, science, math, and social studies. Electives focus on the arts, leadership, and STEM and include band, orchestra, art, or choir; applied technology, robotics, and project lead the way, or; student government and school business partnerships. The school also works to support the academic, behavioral, and social and emotional needs of its students to ensure they are prepared for high school and beyond.
