Joe Lee Johnson is an important figure in the history of the Round Rock Independent School District.
From 1950 to 1986, Johnson served as a beloved bus driver, teacher and principal and was himself a graduate of Round Rock’s Hopewell School. During his time as a student there, the school was segregated. During the 1960s, when Johnson was Hopewell’s principal, he proudly oversaw the school’s desegregation.
Johnson’s spirit is still alive today at the elementary school that was named for him. When Joe Lee Johnson Elementary STEAM Academy opened in 2016, it chose the “Trailblazer” for its mascot.
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and math. At Joe Lee, these subjects are part of every class, and learning is not just about hitting the books — it’s also hands-on learning. Students work on projects together and are challenged to come up with creative solutions to real-world problems.
Brains at Joe Lee Johnson never stop buzzing. As a nationally recognized Project Lead the Way school, students tackle activities in computer and biomedical science. Young botanists can join the Garden Club and budding artists hold “Fine Arts Nights” to showcase their work.
By the time fifth graders head off to middle school, they are ready to continue blazing trails forward in the footsteps of their school’s namesake.

Unfortunately, this school went downhill the last few years. Teachers quit because of terrible administration. The district didn't step in soon enough or appropriately. The staff is overworked and unprepared, and there has been violence. I would not recommend sending your child here.

I have been in this school since Pre-K and I regret coming here. First fights happen like every week or 2 which is really bad, 2nd cuss words are like a habit here now, 3rd behavior is trash, 4th there's a lot of chaos here, and lastly it's just trash don't send your kid here trust me.

JLJ was a wonderful school at the start. My son went through all of elementary there, starting kindergarten the second year it was open. The school is continuing on its downward trajectory under the direction of the principal, Dr. Unger. His archaic approach to education and discipline are failing students and teachers and does nothing to address bullying or the social and emotional needs of students today.
