One of fifteen Chicago Acero School campuses, Zizumbo Elementary shares Acero’s commitment to providing an environment centered around academic success and achievement. Acero focuses on diversity, acceptance, equity and pride in a Hispanic cultural context. Serving students from kindergarten through eighth grade, Zizumbo Elementary School boasts a rigorous curriculum for young learners that includes individualized instruction and strong parent partnerships. Founded in 2008, Zizumbo is home to 600 hundred students who take advantage of several extracurricular offerings including Mastodon team sports like football, basketball and volleyball. Other activities include art club, cheerleading and student council. Zizumbo students can also participate in the Odyssey of the Mind, a national program of problem-solving activities that develop leadership and critical thinking skills for students of all ages. The school places an emphasis on collaboration, community and cohesion, developing skills and approaches that prepare its students for high school and beyond. Zizumbo School is named after fallen Chicago military hero, Daniel Zizumbo, who was killed in 2007 in Afghanistan. This esteemed institution encourages parental and community involvement, including volunteer opportunities, online community and events like Family Literacy Night.
