Christopher Columbus Elementary School is located right in the heart of Ukrainian Village. Over its many years as the neighborhood public elementary school, a thriving community has developed around it. Parents have even created Friends of Columbus, which is a registered nonprofit organization advocating for the school's best interests. This is a Level 1 pre-kindergarten and K-8 school with top ratings for community involvement. Attendance is significantly higher than average for its 240 students and its teachers alike. In general, the official numbers support the narrative: People care about the education students receive at Columbus. Speaking of education, it's a quality public program with a few twists. The biggest surprise is the language program, offered in both Spanish and Ukrainian. There are also several scholastic and academic extracurriculars, including a chess team, book club, science club and writer's workshop. Tutoring and homework help are both available, too. Sports and the arts also have their places at Columbus Elementary. Whether it's on stage at a talent show or on the court at a volleyball tournament, every student has the opportunity to explore a variety of interests. If Columbus sounds like a good fit, be aware that it's a relatively small enrollment area: a section of East Village and some of Ukrainian Village. The zones for Chopin, Pritzker, Diego, Talcott and Mitchell are all nearby, so check your address (or prospective addresses) to confirm.

Pros: -There is only one class per grade. The class sizes are bigger since many migrants got here but the kids still thrive academically, in my opinion.-Most of the kids seem to get along really well and within the last 3 years that my child has been here, I haven’t heard of a single fight. -Biggest...

We are just three weeks in with our son in PreK at Columbus, but its been a great experience so far. He enjoys going to school each day and sang the "ABC" song to us perfectly after just a couple of weeks at the school. This is something we've been working on at home for months without much success...

Our daughter has been there since pre-k 3 and loves going to school each day. Because it's a small school the administration knows the kids and families well and it feels very safe and warm. They have pride in the school and promote that in the children. Go sharks!
