Excel Academy of Southwest is an accelerated high school for students ages 15 to 21 who are behind in their studies and requirements to graduate. Enrollment at the school averages around 100 students, making for smaller class sizes that offer more individualized attention.
Students at Excel Academy can graduate in 2.5 years due to the school’s extended day, which allows students to earn up to 5 credits per semester and 10 credits per year.
The school helps students who have had trouble succeeding in traditional high schools by providing a smaller, more personal setting that focuses on social-emotional issues as well as academics.
To help students with social-emotional issues, Excel Academy offers programs such as art therapy, partnerships with social services and access to Chicago Public School’s Students in Temporary Living Situations services.
In addition to the traditional curriculum of a high school, Excel Academy offers classes that help students gain practical life skills. Topics include cooking, real estate, construction and forklift certification. The school also offers help preparing for college entrance exams and the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery.
Enrollment to Excel Academy is open and there are no tuition or fees for students admitted to the school.
