=Haugan Elementary School has long been an educational cornerstone of Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood. The school first opened its doors in 1910 and was named to honor Helge Alexander Haugan, a Norwegian immigrant who was an area resident and a member of the Chicago Board of Education. After multiple expansions over the years, today Haugan Elementary stretches nearly an entire city block on North Hamlin Avenue. The school prides itself on being a “joyful, nurturing and inclusive community,” which is key in one of Chicago’s most diverse neighborhoods. Roughly 900 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade call Haugan home. Inside its halls, a staff of more than 80 teachers and administrators lead students through an enhanced Common Core curriculum. Thanks to a generous grant, Haugan Elementary has recently adopted Project Lead the Way, a STEM program that utilizes a hands-on teaching methods in a technology-based learning environment. By the time they graduate, students who attend Haugan Elementary will have received a well-rounded education, including Fountas and Pinnell Phonics, Amplify Science and Connected Mathematics.
