The Howe School of Excellence (Howe) is located at 720 N Lorel Avenue on Chicago's West Side. Educating preschool through eighth grades in the community of Austin, the Howe School of Excellence is named after Julia Ward Howe, abolitionist and author of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Managed by the Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL), the Howe School of Excellence strives to lessen learning gaps in inner-city schools. Built at the turn of the century in 1896, the Howe School of Excellence has undergone two renovations and today serves over 400 students. In addition to improving their math and literacy skills, Howe students may participate in rewarding extracurriculars like science lab, yoga and Girl Scouts to become lifelong learners who are "resilient, respectful, and committed to excellence." The school Jets soar on the court and field competing in basketball, volleyball, cheerleading and football. Waving green and white pride, students at the Howe School of Excellence are expected to wear uniforms and behave respectfully towards one another inside the classroom and on the playground. Guiding students towards successful futures, the Howe School of Excellence Jets are taught to fly high and pursue their goals with passion.

In my experience this school has been improving. The school is under new leadership and has recently moved back to a CPS. In the past advanced courses such as Algebra wasn’t an option because there wasn’t a certified Algebra endorsed teacher. Howe has offered Algebra for the last two academic years....
