Bernhard Moos Elementary School, a red brick example of Gothic architecture, was first established in 1893 at 1711 N. California Avenue. The school was named after Bernhard Moos, a German immigrant who served on the Public Library's board of directors in Chicago. Moos Elementary includes pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and enrolls 439 students who enjoy an average student-to-teacher ratio of 11-to-1. 11 percent of Moos Elementary students test at or above required proficiency levels in math and 17 percent test at or above required proficiency levels in reading and language arts. Teachers employ an inclusion method to successfully engage students from differing academic backgrounds. In an inclusive classroom, students are broken into smaller groups and instruction varies depending on the learning needs of each group. Home to great team spirit, Moos Elementary school colors are gold and burgundy and Moo's "Hype" and "Cheerleading" squads enthusiastically root for the "cows" to come home with a victory. Athletics offered at Moos include flag football, soccer, basketball, floor hockey, track and volleyball. Extracurricular activities at Moos highlight students' creative interests in band, piano, ukulele and the mural club. A vibrant community, Moos Elementary students passionately prepare for their futures in a loving and supportive environment.

My son has been accepted into the pre-school program, and thus far, this has been a terrible experience. I'm interested in the dual language program, and every time I call to inquire, I receive a different answer regarding how to get him enrolled in this program. At first, I was told that it's first...

Moos has been a wonderful community for my children. There are many families who have gone to this school multiple generations, and many teachers who send their children to this school (even if they work at other schools). As someone who did not grow up in Chicago, I have felt very at home in this c...

This is our third year as a Moos parent, now we have two children attending. We’re very happy with our kids education so far and as parents were getting more and more involved with the various parent organizations to continually raise funds and help support ongoing initiatives. We value their dual l...

Moos Elementary teachers, students and faculty are amazing! The school is home to the students from surrounding neighborhoods including Bucktown, Humboldt Park and Logan Square and conveniently accessible by the 606, a new elevated walking and biking path that runs through all 3 neighborhoods.
