St. James Lutheran School in Lincoln Park is a private, Christian elementary school serving pre-K through eighth grade students in the DePaul area. The school has a small population, with a general student enrollment of about 125.
Pre-K is especially popular, with a student population almost as high as all other levels combined. The early-childhood program (preschool and kindergarten) has five classrooms and focuses on academics, social skills, guided play, religion and the arts. Additionally, the Mini Mavericks program provides free, bi-weekly play-and-learn sessions for infants to 4-year-olds.
There are two sections for the rest of the classes: a first-to-fourth grade elementary division and a departmentalized, fifth-to-eighth grade middle school. This results in small class sizes with 95% of students accepted to their first choice of Chicago high schools. The academic philosophy at St. James Lutheran School centers on developing each child as a whole person through academics, faith, character and health. To realize that ideal, students of all levels participate in shows, athletics, service projects and field trips.
As children expand their horizons, the opportunities increase in scope and complexity. For example, early-childhood program students might visit local farmers markets while middle schoolers take trips to Springfield. The result is an adventurous program that aims to instill a lifelong love of learning.
