Newberry Elementary Math and Science Academy is a Chicago Public Schools magnet school that specializes in math and science. It serves about 500 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
Like the other magnet programs in Chicago Public Schools, acceptance is based on automated lotteries to ensure all children in the city have equal access.
Classroom instruction includes specific time each day to focus on math and science, as well as one hour weekly for classes in music, technology, art and more.
The school uses the Leader in Me model in which students grow through leadership roles in the classroom that are intended to support students’ unique talents.
A recent survey of students and teachers recognized the school as having very involved parents and very collaborative teachers. Teachers who participated in the survey overwhelmingly said they would recommend the school to parents searching for a place to send their child.
Newberry has a storied and long-reaching history. The school bordered the area engulfed by the Great Chicago Fire, and even served as a temporary hospital for the month after the fire. Lincoln Elementary transitioned to a magnet school in 1981 and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2008.

I found Newberry to be very welcoming. The reception we received from the first day was a warm one. It feels like one big family that watches out for one another. The teachers are very interested in the students.
