Located between the Detroit Shoreway and Ohio City neighborhoods on Cleveland's near west side, Urban Community School (UCS) strives to break barriers of social and economic obstacles to children by providing an individualized, innovative and challenging education. Started by the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland in 1968, its purpose is the successful whole child development of its students.
UCS serves nearly 700 children from infants to eighth graders in the neighborhoods of Cudell, West Boulevard, Detroit Shoreway, Stockyards, Ohio City, Clark Fulton, Brooklyn Centre and Tremont. It is a private faith-based school with a religious curriculum rooted in Catholic social justice principles. The average class size is 19 students in the school-aged program.
The whole child approach has provisional accreditation through the Independent Schools Association of the Central States, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Areas of learning include literacy, math, science, social studies, religious, social-emotional and restorative practices with specials in art, garden, library, music, physical education and Spanish, with middle school students choosing electives each trimester.
MetroHealth System recently partnered with Urban Community to develop a community and school health center on the UCS campus. The partnership enhances access to health care resources for UCS children and their families, UCS faculty, staff and their families as well as the surrounding community. Urban Community engages its faculty, families and community partners in serving the whole child and their many needs academically, emotionally, physically, socially and spiritually.

Urban community school comes from a wonderful place of caring and individualized education. Unfortunately, it has grown into a mega-complex and lost the heart of what made it special before. It is full of kids who need extra attention and they do not have the staff to provide it. Instead of individual education, they favor curriculum-of-the-month.
