Collins Elementary School, part of the Alief Independent School District, is located on Town Park Drive. There are just over 900 Collins Explorers in prekindergarten through fifth grade. Many of the students are enrolled in the school’s dual-language program, which provides instruction in both English and Spanish.
Hosting an annual fall festival and walkathon, Collins Elementary keeps students engaged with special events and extracurriculars available all year. Students maintain a school garden, nature center and rock garden, a project developed with the help of the school’s art teacher. The school has competitive basketball and soccer programs and offers fine arts activities, including an honors choir.
Although Collins Elementary School’s test scores fall below the state average, students make academic progress with a more individualized learning experience; the student-teacher ratio is below the state average, making class sizes smaller and more personalized. The school also participates in the district’s student device program, which allows students to use a Chromebook, or similar device, for digital instruction, collaboration and activities inside and outside the classroom. The school actively invites parent participation through the Community in Schools program and a parent engagement center, which offers popular language classes.
