Garton Elementary first opened in 1958 and was named after George L. Garton, who was a resident of the east side of Des Moines and a Board Secretary for Des Moines Public Schools. In 2007, Garton Elementary and Adams Elementary merged to form what is now known as the new Garton Elementary. Garton Elementary has over 500 students enrolled and around 50 full-time teachers and additional staff to support them. Garton Elementary teaches kindergarten through fifth grade. The school offers a counseling program in addition to courses in music, physical education, technology, English Language Learner (ELL), special education, interventionists and art. Garton Elementary strives to create a safe place where students feel comfortable in their learning space and where everyone is treated fairly. It also provides plenty of yearly activities to engage both students and community members. Parents can easily access online tools like Infinite Campus, Virtual Backpack, handbooks and more on the school’s website. These resources help them to keep an eye on their child’s success.
