Named after the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe, Monroe Elementary School first opened its doors in 1923 with 87 students enrolled and just four rooms for teaching. Two more rooms were added in 1944, and in 1950, an auditorium, gymnasium and more classrooms were added to the building. Today, Monroe Elementary School has around 400 students enrolled with a student-to-teacher ratio of 11:1. Kindergarten through fifth grade is taught standard at Monroe Elementary School along with ELL, intervention education, special education, music, art and physical education.
