Dr. Maya Angelou Elementary School is located in the Greenville section of Jersey City and serves students in prekindergarten to fifth grade. The school pushes its learners to find a love for learning at a young age while building sound relationships with parents, staff, other students and the community. Students are taught to be empathetic and respectful individuals throughout the learning process.
Students at Dr. Maya Angelou recently participated in a schoolwide summer reading program called myON which includes grade-appropriate reading in diversity, life sciences and themes of kindness and respect. Students also strive to become part of organizations like the National Honor Society, which is promoted in the school and the district. Additional extracurricular activities include the FIRST LEGO League, a robotics program fostering STEM learning.
The school recently added a teacher on-call program to its list of offerings. Students can find a teacher for virtual support in any subject during after-school hours each day of the week. Learners at Dr. Maya Angelou Elementary School also benefit from school events such as fall festivals, holiday days and the very popular Ugly Sweater Day.

P.S.20 would be a happier and healthier environment under different leadership. I’ve witness the principal speak down to the female staff, and mock the children. My family transferred here from NYC, and if it wasn’t for the relationships my children built with their teacher, I would’ve removed them....

Wonderful school! I used to go to this school back in 3rd grade. The teachers were amazing and it made me feel like home. We were like families learning together in the classroom.
