Founded in 1948, Baker Elementary has deep roots in Mountain View. Its namesake, Jenny Tucker Baker, was a pioneering educator who migrated West from Rhode Island in the late 1800s and taught in area schools for over half a century. Known for its high academic achievement, the home of the Chargers educates children up to the fifth grade. Baker's educational offerings also include a transitional kindergarten program for pre-kindergarten students, while accelerated learners can take part in a gifted program. Students at Baker participate in reading and math challenges and visual arts projects. Of its nearly 500 students, over 100 take advantage of Baker's afterschool program. Students receive homework assistance, obtain wellness education and have fun during physical fitness activities. Located in the northwest section of Mountain View, the school boasts a variety of facilities that include a large courtyard, outdoor seating, multiple play areas and a sizeable athletic field for team sports.
