Emerald Academy (Emerald) in Knoxville, Tennessee, offers free college-preparatory education to students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. This one-of-a-kind public institution in the Mechanicsville neighborhood is Knox County’s first and only charter school. Its mission is to prepare “scholars for the college of their choice and community leadership.” Serving almost 500 students from across Knox County, Emerald strives to maintain an aspirational atmosphere. Beginning in kindergarten, each classroom posts students’ high school graduation dates above the door. Additionally, each classroom is named for a Southeastern Conference college, Ivy League university, or Historically Black College and University to help scholars keep their eyes on their future. To maximize education time, Emerald’s academic year includes 186 days of instruction, and school days begin earlier and end later. By the end of their eighth-grade year, Emerald scholars will achieve an additional 1.5 years of schooling when compared to their public-school peers. Students at Emerald Academy not only participate in art, music, and physical education, they also have a wide range of opportunities to join basketball, cross country, cheerleading, soccer, track and field, volleyball, softball, and baseball. At Emerald, scholars are encouraged to develop a solid foundation for future success.
