Oak Street Elementary School, part of the Falls Church City Public Schools system, was founded in 1948. Formerly named Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, the highly rated public school welcomes third grade through fifth grade students. As its mission statement reads, “Oak Street Elementary School, in partnership with our families and community, educates and challenges every student to succeed and become a responsible and contributing member of the global community.” In March 2012, Oak Street Elementary School became authorized to implement the Primary Years Program of the International Baccalaureate (IB). Offering an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary framework for young learners, the IB Primary Years Program teaches students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate an international awareness. The program focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both within and beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to think about ways to improve communities. School faculty and administrators focus on fostering skills that students will use throughout their educational journeys to help them thrive as successful, independent learners and thinkers. Extracurricular opportunities abound at Oak Street Elementary School, ranging from choral music and S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) club to student council and safety patrol. Parents of Oak Street Elementary School students speak highly of the school’s offerings, especially the character-building aspects of the IB program. “This is an exceptional school with great teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors, and parent involvement,” one parent posted in an online forum. “While Falls Church City is expensive to live in, I wouldn't move from this school district for anything.”

Overall this is an excellent school with great staff. An increased budget is needed however to provide improved services to low income, special needs and gifted students.

This is an exceptional school with great teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors and parent involvement. While FCC is expensive to live in, I wouldn't move from this school district for anything. My oldest is at MEH and is having a similarly great experience.

We love Thomas Jefferson Elementary. The principal is kind, caring, responsive, and a great leader. Our daughter's teacher is innovative and absolutely brilliant when dealing with our child's ADHD.
