Addams Elementary, located on West McKinley Avenue, is one of 66 elementary schools in the Fresno Unified School District, serving students from kindergarten through sixth grade.
Originally, the school was named Teilman School #2. A schoolhouse, built in 1911, stood near Hughes and McKinley Avenue. The school was part of the Teilman School District, annexed to the Fresno Unified School District in 1931. Teilman’s name was later changed to Jane Addams, to honor the beloved Fresno resident and activist who was a founding member of NAACP, WILPF, the ACLU and more.
The current facilities for the school opened in 1980 on the same site where the original schoolhouse once stood.
As part of the Fresno School District, Addams Elementary provides students with sequential and robust physical education, music, and arts programs, including dance, music, theater, and visual arts.
The district partners with multiple organizations in the Fresno community, including Fresno Arts Council, Fresno Art Museum, Artes Americas, Fresno Philharmonic, Fresno Opera, California Opera Company, Valley Performing Arts Council, Jazz Fresno, CSU Fresno, and the Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child initiative.
Addams offers an after-school program to participating students that provides homework and academic support, physical activity, and enrichment.
