Named in honor of its primary benefactor, NBA legend George “Iceman” Gervin, George Gervin Prep Academy is a tuition-free charter school serving about 250 children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Aside from a well-rounded education, the academy focuses on organizational skills, social-emotional learning and, of course, basketball.
With a modern campus in South Phoenix, GGPA, as it is affectionately called, educates students in a family-like atmosphere to inspire kids to become the best versions of themselves they can be. Here, the faculty teach students to practice compassion, discipline and, above all, a commitment to be there for each other.
Outside of a core curriculum that integrates Open Court Reading, Envision Math, Imagine Learning, and a technology program, students also can thrive in musical performances or build leadership skills in student council. Plus, the more athletically inclined in sixth through eighth grades can find team spirit playing volleyball, flag football, girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball, or co-ed soccer. For every grade level, the academy adopts a wellness policy to help all students achieve physical and mental fitness.
As for other daily particulars, GGPA offers an after-school care program, free meals through the National School Lunch Program, and free transportation services for those who need them.

My kids love this school. I like the communication and the professionalism. The Principal is fantastic and makes sure it is a safe place to learn. The music teacher has performances and teaches songs that keep my kids singing around the house. Job well done!

GGPA has a new staff who care about kid and how they learn. They do not allow bullying and the Principal is always there during breakfast and dismissal to talk with and she takes care of concerns right away. My kids love it there.
