Conn-West is a public elementary school just west of downtown Grandview that serves nearly 400 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The school’s mission is to “provide a safe and caring environment that fosters social-emotional growth and academic excellence.” Known as the Cougars, students at Conn-West Elementary historically have higher test scores than the district average in math, science and English/language arts. With a student-teacher ratio at just over 12-to-1, lower than the district average of 15-to-1, Conn-West students receive more individualized attention to help them through their academic journey. At Conn-West, students can participate in such extracurricular activities as choir, student council and First Lego League. First Lego League (FLL) is a robotics club for fourth and fifth graders where they learn to create and program robots to complete a variety of tasks. In addition to the typical three R’s of reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic, Conn-West students are taught to be respectful, responsible and ready to learn — building the groundwork for a lifetime of curiosity.
