Bowen’s Corner Elementary School is part of the Berkeley County School District, the fourth largest school district in South Carolina. The public school opened its doors in 2018 and is located at 1173 Williams Lane. Bowen’s Corner enrolls approximately 700 students each school year, serving students kindergarten to fifth grade.
Near the large housing development of Tanner Planation, the $22-million school has room to expand to 900 students. On the walls are word groupings of positive affirmations reminding kids to be “gentle, amazing, creative, brave and enthusiastic.”
The school has large computer rooms, a spacious library and multi-age classrooms. The curriculum is based around science, technology, engineering, arts and math, or STEAM. Preparing students for valuable life skills, the faculty focuses on collaboration, critical thinking, adaptability and resilience, and prides itself on competency-based learning. The school also has a Gifted and Talent program, and partners with Boys & Girls Club in their “Eaglet’s Nest,” program to promote leadership, character, fitness and health and valuable life skills.
Home of the Soaring Eagles, the school has received grants and recognition, including awards from local businesses for wellness, gardening and a STEAM grant from Google. The student-teacher ratio is 16 to 1, a bit higher than the state average, but the students of Bowen Corner shine as bright as their colors of navy, gold and turquoise.
