Congregation Beth Israel, the oldest Reform Jewish synagogue in Texas, started a nursery school with 15 children in 1967. From that beginning, Congregation Beth Israel established the Shlenker School, one of the first Reform Jewish day schools in the U.S. and the first in Texas. The Shlenker School now enrolls over 350 students from pre-K through fifth grade and accepts children at six weeks old in the Meyerland Area neighborhood off North Braeswood Boulevard and Mullins Drive. The school provides excellent academics, an integrated secular and Jewish curriculum emphasizing social action with a warm, welcoming community. Supported by passionate, experienced educators operating in state-of-the-art facilities, Shlenker graduates grow up to become confident, collaborative thinkers and leaders. One of Shlenker’s unique facilities is its art studio which overlooks one of the school's many green spaces. Bathed in natural light, the studio features a minimalistic design that encourages students to immerse themselves in their art projects. The most celebrated of Shlenker’s green spaces is known as the Shlenker BackYard, a 1.5-acre nature preserve that packs in four ecosystems such as prairie, pond, forest and wetland. This outdoor classroom teaches children environmental ethics and the Jewish value of not destroying or wasting resources in nature. Indoor learning opportunities abound, including those in the Spark Lab, a space that encourages creating, inventing and exploring in STEM. In addition, the school offers a Literacy Lab, music room, Purposeful Play Lab and a Science Lab for a robust curriculum.

We have had a wonderful experience! We love the teachers and all the extra learning activities. I would like more opportunities for parents to help inside the classroom or with class activities.

There is so much to appreciate about this school. The physical space alone is uplifting, bright and cheery. The teachers are caring, the classes small, and the curriculum stimulating. My graduate had ample opportunity to speak in front of the school, and she became a confident student through the ye...
