Highlands Middle School is a magnet school specializing in Aviation and Military Science for grades six through eight. Located in Highlands, it is part of the Duval County Public School system and serves students from all over Jacksonville. The student population ranges from around 750 to 800 students, and the school boasts a student-teacher ratio is 18-to-1, which is better than average for the district.
In addition to core subjects, Highlands offers students a unique opportunity to develop their interest in aviation and leadership skills. The school integrates its Aviation and Military Science program throughout the academic curriculum and gives students hands-on experience. For example, an aviation ground school elective puts students in the cockpit of on-site flight simulators while they learn the principles of flight. Students can also participate in outdoor confidence courses, indoor rock climbing, physical training programs, field trips and special guest lectures.
Students at Highlands Middle School are required to wear uniforms; each grade wears a different color. The Wildcats show school spirit in various sports, including football, basketball and cheerleading. Numerous clubs also engage students, such as the Spanish Club, the Art Club and the Student Government Association. This school offers numerous opportunities for students to learn transferrable skills they can take on to future endeavors.
