KIPP Bessie Coleman Academy is a charter school serving students in Duval County from kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is part of the nationally recognized Knowledge is Power Program, which runs four schools in Jacksonville.
As a charter school, the Academy enjoys more academic flexibility than traditional public schools. Named after the first African American and Native American woman to receive an international pilot's license, KIPP Bessie Coleman pushes its students to reach for the sky. In addition to core academics, there is an emphasis on character building and a daily lesson in character education. Faculty helps students by modeling positive behavior and teaching strategies for focus and self-control.
The extended day program offers physical education, drama and art. Students can also participate in clubs including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, flag football, soccer, yoga, sign language and Girls on the Run, which uses physical activity to help build self-confidence. From its programs to its name, KIPP Bessie Coleman inspires children to achieve.
