John F. Kennedy High School is a public, co-educational institution that serves students from ninth grade through graduation. It enrolls nearly 600 young adults and is located at 6026 Paris Ave. in the Fillmore neighborhood of New Orleans. The school was reopened in 2018 after over a dozen years of lobbying by alumni to have Kennedy High reinstated after it was extensively damaged and eventually closed by Hurricane Katrina. The original Kennedy building was built in the 1960s after Hurricane Betsy but was torn down in 2011. The new campus operates as a KIPP Public School, a network of more than 270 facilities spread across the United States. The goal of John F. Kennedy High School is to inspire its students to not only be leaders, but to be trailblazers in whatever they do. It tailors lessons and courses to individual learners to allow the student to discover their interests and master the skills needed for their potential career paths. One way the school does this is with its Jump Start programs, which allow students to get hands-on experience in carpentry, graphic design, science, technology, engineering and mathematics or STEM. Kennedy High offers team sports like football, volleyball, cheerleading and track and field, as well as extracurriculars such as band, dance team, majorettes and flag team.
