Banneker Elementary, home of the Panthers, is a public elementary school on the eastern side of Downtown Kansas City that serves over 300 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Its mission is to “create a generation of innovative critical thinkers and problem solvers” and is striving to become one of the top 10 elementary schools in America.
Banneker Elementary is named after Benjamin Banneker, a self-taught mathematician, astronomer and inventor born in 1731. He was an abolitionist and helped spread anti-slavery pamphlets in the pre-Civil War era. Banneker was also an advisor for President Thomas Jefferson and became internationally known for his inventions and achievements.
For a school seeking to create a generation of critical thinkers, they certainly chose the right person to inspire the institution’s name.
Although the school’s test scores have been lower than the district’s, the school has a student-teacher ratio of 12:1, which is lower than the district average. This enables the teachers to give the students more one-on-one attention. 97% of teachers at Banneker Elementary are fully licensed, making it higher than the district average of 92%.
