Weddington Elementary School, known as WDES, is a highly rated school operated by Union County public schools (UCPS) that serves 720 students in pre-kindergarten through grade five. The school is located on a sprawling campus in central Weddington that includes the middle and high schools, and was built in 1996 to address the population growth in the area. WDES is one of the top performing schools in the entire state, and ties its neighbor Rea View Elementary in Weddington as the #4 school statewide in math scores. The school offers some unique options to area parents seeking a quality education for their children. For example, children as young as four years of age can attend the pre-kindergarten program. And the school is one of a handful in UCPS that offers a Spanish language dual immersion program in which students can become fluent in both English and Spanish over all subject areas. WDES emphasizes STEAM education – science, technology, engineering, arts and math – for all students. Beyond the classroom, students participate in community volunteer activities. This school is very loving and nurturing. The communication skills are fabulous. We love Weddington Elementary. It truly is the best school in the area!
