Established in 1983, Cold Harbor Elementary School in Mechanicsville, Va., serves approximately 550 students in pre-k through fifth grade. The Home of the Cougars is on a mission to help inspire a love of learning in students while empowering them to be the best versions of themselves. This school believes in developing a strong community among staff, students, and families. While regularly engaging families in school events, the school has back-to-school nights and parent-teacher organization fund-raisers. In 1999, Cold Harbor was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education.
Resources include art, music, library, and physical education. In art, the goal is to engage students in creative thinking and how to solve problems to communicate visually in the 21st century.
The school also offers two pre-kindergarten programs: Early Childhood Special Education and Hanover Preschool Initiative. The former provides instruction to children identified as having a disability, and are eligible for Special Education services. The program aims to emphasize problem-solving, social engagement, language development, literacy, pre-writing and math activities, each of which is tailored to each child’s unique needs. The latter is designed to promote school readiness and social competence among admitted three- and four-year-old students.
