Where students are affectionately known as the Caring Cardinals, this public school consists of three preschool programs, and also serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. While the student-to-teacher ratio is 21:1, which is a bit higher than the state average, Mechanicsville Elementary is either meeting or exceeding all state benchmarks in core subject areas.
Among the traditional core classes, the school has an Innovation Lab, which is a unique learning space teachers can request to use with students that includes a Tiny Tech Cafe for small group collaboration, portable Lego wall, flexible seating options, a recording studio, a green screen wall, and a Makerspace complete with materials. Creativity and space to explore is not in short supply at the Home of the Cardinals. There are various technology devices available for use, such as laptops, iPads, Snap Circuit Kits, and 3D Doodler Pens. There is also a host of robots for small group learning.
Mechanicsville Elementary, which is part of the Hanover County Public Schools, was awarded a grant by the Hanover Education Foundation to use toward Kindness Projects for the students. These projects are designed to build community relationships and make the community a better place to live.

The majority of the staff listed in previous reviews are no longer employed at MES. Our family is new to the school this year and we're considering other options. The teachers love my kids! The school is a great place to be. I am proud to have my family be a part of this community. I do wish the art, pe, and technology programs were stronger. Overall, it's a good place!
