Westside Academy is located in the urban neighborhood of Washington Park in Milwaukee. The school is part of the Milwaukee Public School district and serves several hundred children each year in preschool through fifth grade. Formerly Milwaukee’s historic 31st Street School, Westside Academy doesn’t look much like any other schoolhouse in the city, and for good reason: Milwaukee-based architectural firm R.G. Kirsch and Co. designed the original building, which was one of the only schools the firm developed. The school touts its high-achieving programs and specialized curriculum, and prides itself on helping students solve complex problems while developing their critical thinking skills. Students connect with mentors from the community and benefit from free after-school programs, including intramural sports, tutoring, and literature classes. Westside Academy focuses on teaching core academics, reinforcing positive behaviors, and emphasizing the social-emotional development of its students. The school also offers a variety of after-school sports like basketball, softball, flag football, and cheerleading. Students enjoy access to an art room, music classes, and small theater productions. Uniforms are required.
