KIPP Northstar is one of two tuition-free public charter schools in Minneapolis operated by the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) a network of college-preparatory schools in low income communities across the United States. KIPP is America's largest network of charter schools. KIPP Northstar is actually two schools in one: an elementary school, which serves about 275 students annually in kindergarten through fourth grade, and a middle school, which enrolls about 200 students a year in grades 5 through 8. The school operates on a longer school day Monday through Thursday, and half days on Fridays. One of the main goals is literacy, and KIPP partners with established literacy partners to develop what the school calls "master readers." In addition to core curriculum instruction, KIPP believes in the power of artistic expression for the development of the whole person, and includes music and art for the enjoyment and benefit of its students. According to KIPP's national website, continuous learning is one of the organization's core values, and it is evidenced in both leadership development and support for excellent teaching among its staff. Students are required to wear school uniforms, and bus transportation is provided. A free breakfast, lunch and snack is provided daily for all students.
