The independent Montessori School of Johns Island, located at 3634 Mary Ann Point Road, takes up five acres in the rural community of Johns Island. Armed with a teaching philosophy that stresses student responsibility, self-motivation, and freedom, the program teaches languages, science, positive attitudes and a sense of respect for the world.
Enrolling about 40 kids each year, the school serves students from 18 months old through kindergarten. Incorporating different programs for each age group, children learn through applying practical education with an emphasis on independence. Imagination is encouraged and teachers help children draw upon their own unique intelligence and growth to complete projects and solve problems. Respecting each child’s development is a guiding principle.
Students learn how to value independence as well as teamwork. One way this concept is implemented is through the school’s organic garden. Children tend to the garden on campus and keep personal journals of the experience. In addition, The Junior Master Gardener program teaches students the importance of sustainability by creating their own field gardens of indigenous flora and fauna.
