Robert Churchwell Elementary, named for African American journalist Robert Churchwell, offers students their own museum. The school teaches them to be curators, designers and docents for artifacts displayed on loan from larger museums and Churchwell households. Their Paideia-style instruction guides students to communicate respectfully with each other while practicing critical thinking. This type of teaching develops attitudes that help them create a successful future and pursue a meaningful life. The school serves around 244 prekindergarten through fourth-grade students in the Nashville public school system. With Robert Churchwell's smaller student body, its student-teacher ratio is only 13-to-1. The school schedules monthly field trips to museums for the households it serves, a parent support group for parents to share concerns and receive training to help their child academically, along with GED courses for them. Weekly enrichment classes supplement learning for gifted students. Although test scores have been low at this school compared to other Tennessee schools, it continues to make improvements and push its students' abilities.
