The first Mount Carmel school originated in New Orleans’ French Quarter in 1838. It exclusively educated girls and quickly became cramped from the community’s high demand. To solve the overcrowding problem, 10 acres of land were bought in the rural area of Lakeview right on the lakefront. This is New Orleans, though, and much of the land it’s built on was reclaimed from the swamp and from Lake Pontchartrain. Lakeview just so happened to be one such place; by the time the waters were drained back into the lake, Mount Carmel Academy was well away from the Pontchartrain.
Waterfront view or not, Mt. Carmel is still exclusively for girls and serves those in grades eight through twelve. Located at 7027 Milne Blvd., they enroll more than 1200 students and believe in educating through project-based learning. This technique encourages learning by doing, something easy to accomplish with Mr. Carmel’s state of the art facilities. The school features a performing arts center, several gymnasiums, a maker lab, a television studio, and a dedicated fine arts building.
The academy also believes all students have an obligation to their community, so pupils complete between 25 and 45 hours of time helping community organizations each year. At Mount Carmel, girls are taught to be responsible, intelligent women who engage the world with confidence and compassion.
