Saint Katharine Drexel Preparatory School has a long legacy. Found in the Uptown New Orleans neighborhood of West Riverside, the college preparatory school was established in 1915 by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Originally named Xavier University Preparatory School, the institution was taken over by six alumni in 2013 when Xavier Prep was set to close. The alumni began administering the campus and changed the name to honor St. Katharine Drexel, a nun who worked in New Orleans educating minority children. The school enrolls 270 students and serves girls from seventh grade through 12. Classes are kept small, and the student-to-teacher ratio is 14–1, ensuring each pupil is given one-on-one time with their teachers. The school is a private Catholic institution, and tuition is dependent on grade level, although the highest fee is $8,850 for seniors. St. Katharine’s is successful in its mission to prepare students for college as 98% of graduating seniors go on to a four-year university. For athletically inclined students, the school offers volleyball, softball, basketball, and track and field. It also encourages its students to take part in co-curricular activities and clubs. There are nearly 20 to choose from, including band, robotics, theater, modern dance and student council.

My experience at Drexel Prep was rocky. I truly believe this school has made a drastic change over the years and not for the best. Although the sisterhood is phenomenal; the order, structure and the way things are ran lacks. The school needs to make a change and start listening to the students for once.

After spending my first semester at Xavier, I definitely found it hard to get used to it since it was so different from my previous school. The school offers help from so many different perspectives. Hard work, determination, and passion drove me to finish my semester strong. The school overall encourages me to become a leader to promote a more just society.

Xavier Prep has a wonderful climate that fosters leadership and sisterhood. Students leave from Prep with a sense of confidence in their abilities to excel in whatever areas they choose to pursue.

How dare anyone say that there are public schools better. As a Xavier University Preparatory High School graduate I can assure you, I was prepared from stem to stern for everything I was to experience in Washington, DC when I was graduated from THE PREP. If you prefer to send your child to a public...
