Saint Katharine Drexel Preparatory School has a long legacy. Found in the Uptown New Orleans neighborhood of West Riverside, the college preparatory school was established in 1915 by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Originally named Xavier University Preparatory School, the institution was taken over by six alumni in 2013 when Xavier Prep was set to close. The alumni began administering the campus and changed the name to honor St. Katharine Drexel, a nun who worked in New Orleans educating minority children. The school enrolls 270 students and serves girls from seventh grade through 12. Classes are kept small, and the student-to-teacher ratio is 14–1, ensuring each pupil is given one-on-one time with their teachers. The school is a private Catholic institution, and tuition is dependent on grade level, although the highest fee is $8,850 for seniors. St. Katharine’s is successful in its mission to prepare students for college as 98% of graduating seniors go on to a four-year university. For athletically inclined students, the school offers volleyball, softball, basketball, and track and field. It also encourages its students to take part in co-curricular activities and clubs. There are nearly 20 to choose from, including band, robotics, theater, modern dance and student council.

There are both pros and cons. You will have good and bad days here. Teachers and education could improve. Many students are struggling.

The dorm I live in is really comfortable for me as a student coming from Chicago to New Orleans on my own. The dorms are really safe and supervised 24/7. I am within 10 minutes of grocery stores as well as fast food places if I don't want to go to the caf. The caf food is great and the staff are great. we also have flexbucks so I can have Starbucks all the time without bothering my parents! The teachers communicate very well, this includes counselors and the campus departments.

Xavier Prep has a wonderful climate that fosters leadership and sisterhood. Students leave from Prep with a sense of confidence in their abilities to excel in whatever areas they choose to pursue.

How dare anyone say that there are public schools better. As a Xavier University Preparatory High School graduate I can assure you, I was prepared from stem to stern for everything I was to experience in Washington, DC when I was graduated from THE PREP. If you prefer to send your child to a public...
