Walter L. Cohen College Prep is a public charter school serving grades nine through twelve. It’s one of three campuses run by New Orleans College Prep and offers multiple programs and features to engage students during classes and after. Their Jump Start Pathways include Health Sciences, Programming and Development, Graphic Design, and Carpentry. After-school programs include club sports such as indoor/outdoor track and field events, basketball, volleyball, and soccer, all of which are under the direction of the Louisiana High School Athletics Association. The school is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and offers both gifted programs as well as a social worker and transition coordinator for those having trouble adjusting to their new high school. Walter L. Cohen College Prep has earned an A- for diversity among its students and a B grade for its clubs and athletics. While Cohen College Prep’s 50% graduation rate is less than the state average, it does represent an improvement overall for the New Orleans school system as only one in ten students in the city graduated high school prior to Hurricane Katrina. This higher graduation rate may be partially attributed to the student/teacher ratio of 13:1, a statistic well below the state average of 31:1. Walter L. Cohen College Prep is named after a pioneering free man of color who was among only a handful of African American people to hold public office after the Civil War. He also went on to establish the People’s Life Insurance Company, and Cohen College Prep strives to continue Mr. Cohen’s legacy of excellence to this day.

Overall it's a good school , with great staff. The staff treats each student with respect and always consider their feelings. Each students is heard and encouraged to do their best.

My experience at Walter L Cohen was great my freshman and sophomore year we had great teachers who were positive being willing to help. But, when my junior and senior year cake we changed staffs completely and teachers and students looked at each other as competition rather than family . Also there was a lot of mess between teachers that students were aware of and students would get blame for the drama of the teachers .

The school made great advancements this year but I am concerned that the new Principal and the new CEO are disconnected from their staff. Over 50% of the teachers have left for other schools. The low teacher to student ratio was good for my daughter. She is college ready and even has a medical assis...

Flabbergasted about the kids performances. I went in there and everyone was behaving well, discussing the work. I GREATLY recommend this school if you want your child to succeed, The teachers teach greatly and the students listen when spoken to. One kid one day gave me a ice cream with his last doll...
