First opened in 2011, New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy is a public charter school that requires every student to be a member of the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. Students are called cadets and the school is housed on an abandoned naval base in the Behrman neighborhood of New Orleans. A $17 million restoration was finished in 2013, allowing the school to move into two redesigned century-old naval buildings, as well as providing the facility with new primary construction. This co-educational academy enrolls cadets from eighth to 12th grade and is located at 425 O’Bannon St. Music and band rooms, science and computer labs, and a gymnasium are among the campus offerings. Cadets can choose from a variety of sports, including wrestling, rugby and cross-country track. One of its first graduating classes, the class of 2018, had a 97% graduation rate with more than half of those cadets going on to a four-year college. The school also achieved a School Performance Score of “A” in from the state board of education in 2018 and was an Equity Honoree in 2019.

Education is good. Staff seems to care about helping students learn and helping you get to where you need to be. The after school tutoring is a prime example. Lacks the creative background for all different types of students to grow into their selves.

Worst job I have ever had. The marines should take a closer look at this school. They disrespect the marine uniform on a daily basis.

Our experience with the teachers and JROTC Instructors was incredible. But there are leadership issues that need to be addressed so the teachers can continue doing the excellent job they do.

Dr. Garcia does not provide this institution with adequate leadership skills, and instead relies on ineffective, dead policies. I was asked to come back the following year, I declined, because the administration is so unprofessional, and was “fired” after expressing that I would not return. I would’...

School is very structured. Teachers and very invested in the future of students. ROTC instructors are amazing. The only thing that I can say negative is there is no parent involvement and some of the sports are ran by parents of students or former students with little experience for coaching high sc...
