The East Village’s Asher Levy School is a public elementary school that takes its name from one of the first settlers in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, later to become New York City. With a low student-to-teacher ratio of 9-to-1 and a full staff of professionally certified teachers, the school enrolls roughly 250 students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. A program for children with autism called the ASD Nest Support Project was added to the school in 2009, and classrooms with integrated co-teaching allow a mix of students to learn together in one room with two teachers. Students are grouped developmentally to assist students who encounter difficulties in important subject areas such as such as math and reading. Writing lessons and a focus on literacy begins early at Asher Levy, with students learning about story structure and reading fundamentals as early as kindergarten. The school enjoys partnerships with Third Street Music School, the Tenement Museum, Rosie’s Theater Kids, America Reads, and local institutions of higher education like New York University, SUNY Cortland and Metropolitan College. Field trips include visits to the Union Square Farmers Market, Theodore Roosevelt’s birthplace and Theater for the New City. With a child-centered and “literature-rich” curriculum, students at Asher Levy are celebrated for their differences and primed to become intuitive learners and outstanding young scholars.

My child is in NEST program, and we are very happy with the progress. Even though his teachers are not good at communicating with parents, but I can see a positive transforming in my child. It's a small school, and seems warm and welcome. My child loves the science teacher, and I wish there were mor...

The first day my children had not been registered even though the paperwork was done on my behalf months ago. They don't let you know any i...

I disagree with the teachers comment because perhaps they say that the school is safer but that is not the truth. If a child gets hurt in the school they down play it and say it was a mistake. This is how the principal along with the teachers play games. They never tell you what is learned in the cl...
