Progressive is the descriptive label often applied to the Institute for Collaborative Education, a coeducational public secondary school for students in sixth through 12th grades. The curriculum is informed by the work of Harvard professor Ted Sizer, whose egalitarian educational philosophy is outlined in his book, Horace’s Compromise. Small classes and learning focused on a few core subjects form guiding principles. The school is part of a network of 30 schools in New York state that are almost totally exempt from standardized testing. The atmosphere is casual and, of course, "collaborative," with students and teachers addressing each other by first names and determining the content of lessons together. Learning is hands-on and often student-guided, involving subject categories that are unrestricted and loose. History classes might range into literature — the study of the Roman Empire, for example, can feature acting out of scenes from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Science lessons have brought students to the Bronx River to sample water for analysis. ICE shares quarters with two co-located public schools in the former Stuyvesant High School building, a grand five-story structure dating from 1906. Enrichment opportunities at the school are incredibly expansive, including Afro-Latin drumming, a community service club called Deeds, an award-winning jazz band and participation in city-wide debate tournaments.

Ice is a tiny school, with pedo teachers with many controversies going on. The school once thrived but now is just full of pot heads and dummies. Ice has one floor that is shared with another School. The math teachers are teaching Spanish and vise versa, this schools a mess and don't get me started on the sports

Going into college I was incredibly unprepared due to the education I received at this school. There are many core classes I did not take and there are hardly any resources for students. The building is shared with multiple other schools and we do not have regular access to many of the facilities and many classes were lacking in materials and resources, specifically art.

It was very positive overall. My son attended ICE from 6-12. Before ICE, he was an indifferent student, and felt like school was something being done to him, and that he had to endure. Attending ICE was like flipping a switch. It was such a good fit for him. He felt his autonomy as a student and a p...

My son Anthony was in the first graduating class of ICE. The setting was ideal for him as there were only 12 students in his class. They are "hands-on" and require parental assistance and support. My son has graduated from college and is now a dad, a husband and a full-time employee at Children's Ai...

I had already been used to this sort of teaching style, but for some people who came from a more "organized" teaching style, the change could be difficult at first. 6TH GRA...
