Public Middle School | Grade 6-8
735 W End Ave,  New York, NY
3.0
MS 250 West Side Collaborative Middle School (West Side Collaborative) is a coed public school educating around 160 sixth- through eighth-graders and offering an approximately 10-to-one student-teacher ratio. The school is housed in a three-story red brick building dating from 1950, sharing this location with Public School 75. At West Side Collaborative, block scheduling organizes subjects throughout the school day. A small honors program allows advanced students to take classes in Regents-level algebra and living environment. For those in need of extra support, lunchtime tutoring sessions are available. Also, draft report cards are issued three weeks before final grades, to offer chances to boost performance. The college preparatory curriculum takes on a determinedly hands-on approach, rather than relying on textbook-heavy lessons. For example, history coursework on the Harlem Renaissance might lead students to go on a walking tour of Harlem and visit a soul food restaurant for lunch. During a science-immersion week in May, classes might launch homemade rockets in Central Park, examine DNA under a microscope or visit a planetarium. A partnership with Wingspan Performing Arts allows for a similar experiential approach in theater. Broadway stars visit the school and students receive free tickets to shows. These experiences are expanded upon in performance arts classes, where students write their own scripts, perform sketches and choreograph dance routines.
