Abbreviated for simplicity’s sake as NEST+M, New Explorations into Science, Technology and Math is a public school offering classes for gifted and talented students in kindergarten through 12th grade. One of five gifted and talented schools within New York City’s public education system, NEST+M offers a solid Common Core curriculum enhanced by an impressive array of enrichment programs and extracurricular activities for students in the Lower, Middle and Upper schools. A partnership with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, for example, brings movement to the Lower School students, while the College Now program in conjunction with Hunter College is designed as a preparatory course for Upper School students. There are language courses in Mandarin and Spanish, as well as a generous number of Advanced Placement classes in biology, English, physics, psychology, calculus, chemistry, computer science and statistics. The Upper School curriculum comes with a 60-hour community service commitment, and there’s an array of student clubs aimed at every taste imaginable, from yearbook, fashion club and genealogy to the Science Olympiad team. Along with the usual slate of Public Schools Athletic League offerings, the school has a badminton club, a cheerleading team, a skateboarding club, and a yoga and meditation club. Housed in in an eye-catching, blue building on the Lower East Side, NEST+M is the only gifted and talented schools in Manhattan with a public, K-12 program.

Great community, great culture, best place to send your child for their most important years. Amazing experience for me and I will always cherish my time at Nest.

We're a small school so a lot of our students are really close-nit. There are so many resources in this school, ranging from the counselors to the constant flyers of activities posted on the wall.

Excellent in terms of academics. Fantastic PTA. Parents are highly involved. My daughter has been at NEST since kindergarten (now 3th grade). We've been incredibly impressed with the school so far.

One major advantage of NEST is the on-site after-school program offering a broad set of enrichment activities like sports, music, chess, arts, etc. NEST also has a very active PTA, very engaged parents, and a good sense of school community. Most of the classes have teaching assistants paid for with...

Overall, highly organized& safe, with a fabulous PTA that really makes NEST a special place. Also good enrichment options. Strong academic push. But lacks the priority of building community and and the social-emotional learning so essential to long-term success and well-being.

I have a 3rd grade daughter who goes to NEST+m. Most of all, she loves her teachers. This gives me a great comfort that there is someone in school she can trust. In terms of curriculum, all subjects seem to cover what 3rd graders need to learn. Workload (i.e., homework) has been reasonable so that s...

Mark Berkowitz has come on board as the new principal after the former retired. It's been a little bumpy with regards to his transition, but...
