The New Amsterdam School takes its name from the original Dutch colonial outpost in Manhattan and enrolls children from nursery age to grade five. Organized along the lines of the Waldorf method, the coed student body of this private school enjoys small class sizes and individualized instruction from talented educators. Following the educational philosophy of founder Rudolf Steiner, the Waldorf style of teaching and learning represents the largest independent school movement in the world. Teachers de-emphasize tests and grading, with faculty seeking to encourage imagination and creativity in all areas of study.
Founded in 2006 by a private group of parents and educators, the New Amsterdam School integrates music and art into the instruction of traditional academic subjects. Lessons in choir, orchestra and music theory supplement the school's performing arts curriculum, which includes dance, drama and creative writing. Drawing, painting, sculpture and textiles are offered as well, while foreign languages studies include Spanish and Japanese.
The school features an open classroom layout, while outdoor excursions for study, performance or play are common during each school day. The school generally groups students developmentally, beginning with “Seedlings” for the youngest students, “Maples” for 2-year-olds and mixed-age classes in kindergarten and grades one through five. The New Amsterdam School also offers summer programs—making this private school a wonderful educational option for children in the East Village.

My daughters are in their fourth year at New Ansterdam, we love the school! A very nurturing environment, healthy meals cooked from scratch, lots of outdoor time in beautiful big garden, gorgeous class rooms with toys made of all natural materials. The teachers are extremely caring and observant.
