Urban's environment entirely lacks the structure needed in a high school. All classes are mixed grade and have a strong emphasis on project based learning and debate. Students smoke during school hours, sometimes in front of teachers. Students may as well be told that the concept of testing is the root of all evil. Since Urban is both a transfer and a consortium school, many students wind up spending an additional year (sometimes 2) in high school, transferring schools again, or getting a GED due to the Prereqs and Proficiencies (colossal, brobdingnagian, walloping projects in place of the simple regents) that Urban barely warns prospective students about. The school is a mess. I genuinely do not know what color the walls in the office are due to the fact that they're entirely covered in paper. The girls bathroom has some highly questionable decor and the boys bathroom is the size of a shoebox. The student body is nice but school itself sucks. I don't feel prepared for college at all.

As an upcoming senior at urban I would say that it's a school that really has changed my life and opened me up as a person. We have great art and photography classes as well as unique academic classes that we get to choose on our own. They don't automatically throw us straight into our schedules at the beginning of the year and let new and current really get comfortable with each other. There are opportunities to get internships and I'm currently enrolled to take college classes. If you prefer a small environment Urban is a perfect school for you.
