Nestled next to Nueve Park in South Phoenix, Irene Lopez School is a public elementary school serving children in kindergarten through eighth grade within the Roosevelt School District. Here, students are taught that success begins by following the three P’s, meaning you always should strive to be prepared, punctual and, above all, polite.
At the beginning of each day, all Irene Lopez students participate in WIN time, which stands for “what I need” time. In this program, students spend an hour dedicated solely to engaging in reading to accelerate their progress based on individual needs.
As foundation of the core curriculum, the school uses EngageNY for both math and English language Arts instruction and integrates technology into the entire educational experience, with document cameras and SMART interactive whiteboards available in every classroom. In addition, the school provides enough laptops to serve half the student body at a time.
Outside of core curriculum classes, students also regularly attend classes for physical education, library, music/band, and technology. Teachers incorporate 21st century applications to accelerate digital literacy and learning for all students, including Edmodo, NewsELA, Google Classroom, MobyMax, Study Island, and Code.org.
As for extracurriculars, students can pursue interest in a range of clubs from art club and student council to Chief Science Officers and community service, among others. In addition, the school recently added a new gymnasium that seats nearly 500 people. Team sports in basketball, volleyball, and cheerleading have a state-of-the-art arena to allow students to shine.
