Opened in 1992, the school's name is from the language of the Akimel O'odham (Pima) People and means "Children of the River." Native American influences can be seen throughout the campus, including the circular form of the Native American kiva. The school was the first Kyrene school to have a networked computer system. A distinguishing program at Kyrene Akimel A-Al Middle School is the Dual Language program. It provides students with literacy and content in both English and Spanish. Leaders at Kyrene Akimel A-Al Middle School report that students benefit both socially and cognitively, develop greater non-verbal problem-solving abilities, and gain more flexible thinking. Kyrene Akimel A-Al Middle School is led by six qualities of good character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Its mascot is the “Rattler” to connect the school with the history and culture of the surrounding desert. Kyrene Akimel A-Al Middle School is a part of the Kyrene School District, one of Arizona’s leading public school districts providing excellence in education for more than a century. We are very happy with our experiences at Akimel. They educate the whole child to be effective in every aspect of their life.

This school is top notch. Great teachers and admin and office staff. I love that the adults on campus KNOW my kid (and not because he is In trouble all of the time). It’s a big school but has a small school, personal feeling. I’m excited about next year!

My daughter is about to graduate form Akimel. I have nothing but good things to say about this school. It is amazing how she has grown academically, in leadership, in sportsmanship, and in terms of art. This is an amazing school where there is diversity and inclusion. They have a good mix of program...

Will over discipline on minor infractions and under discipline on serious infractions. Need for many improvemen...
