South Phoenix Prep and Arts Academy serves about 300 children in kindergarten through fourth grade with a modern campus in the South Mountain neighborhood. The academy is a non-profit, tuition-free public charter school with open enrollment.
Here, the faculty follow a mission dedicated to building a strong foundation of character in all of their students with a set of core values including trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Even though students are in elementary school, the academy integrates teaching methods focused on life-long learning and college and career readiness.
In the classroom, the curriculum incorporates STEAM learning principles. South Phoenix Prep elevates visual and performing arts education into the overall student experience. Students can build creative and social skills in theater, music, multimedia art, photography, graphics, and in a range of dance styles from ballet to lyrical dance.
On the athletics front, the elementary school focuses on fundamental skills that will help students develop better physical fitness from improving hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness to throwing and catching techniques. Although no extracurricular team sports are offered at these lower grade levels, students can enjoy friendly competitive games in the course of their physical education.
The academy also offers free transportation with several bus routes throughout the South Mountain area.
