Near the base of South Mountain in South Phoenix, Southwest Elementary is a public school serving more than 500 children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade as part of the Roosevelt School District No. 66.
Here, students excel through project-based learning and a curriculum that integrates capstone projects where individuals do research and present their own work, building social skills and confidence. To keep everyone on the same playing field, Southwest Elementary offers Apple devices for all students so they can learn independently and gain digital literacy at a young age.
Outside of the classroom, students at each grade level journey on multiple educational field trips throughout the year to apply learning in real world experiences. Closer to home, students can get hands-on experience while nurturing plants and animals in the school’s very own pollinator garden and vegetable garden, which helps builds a closer bond to nature and the community. In addition, Southwest Elementary has invested in its own tortoise habitat to bring a unique perspective on caring for the environment.
As for extracurriculars, students can stay actively engaged in basketball, soccer, volleyball, and cheerleading. Through an after-school program, students can also participate in Girl Scouts, Phoenix Zoo Club, Rise to Read, and a Youth Participatory Research program which is available through a partnership with Arizona State University.
